The only known source of Jommelli’s Laudate pueri Dominum for 16 voices is held at the National Library of Portugal. It is an incomplete autograph manuscript whose content has been reconstructed and published in Italy (2021), and which will finally be heard in its modern world premiere .

Following the identification of the author of the Laudate pueri Dominum (2006) and its reconstruction and publication (Libreria Musicale Italiana / Centro Studi Santa Giacinta Marescotti, 2021), the final step for the full dissemination of Niccolò Jommelli’s masterpiece will be the modern world premiere at the Church of São Roque. It will be performed by soloists, the Americantiga Ensemble, and the Nova Era Vocal Ensemble, conducted by Ricardo Bernardes.

Originally premiered at St Peter’s Basilica (Rome, 1750) at a time when Jommelli was assistant maestro di cappella there, the Laudate pueri Dominum for 16 voices and basso continuo marked his debut as a composer at the Vatican Basilica. With two choirs near the altar and another two choirs on the gallery at the base of the dome, 53 metres away, the coordination problems between the various instruments and voices proved insurmountable, which is why the piece was only sung a single time.
